As we have prepared for the trip over this past year, Jerry and I have discovered some interesting things. Most of you know that we are Texans by birth. When you are born and raised in the state of Texas you grow up with certain assumptions. Some of them won't be too palatable to my Oklahoma audience like
1) Texas is the best state - period
2) Texas is the most important state and therefore naturally the center of everything.
3) Anything that you learned or experienced growing up in Texas is right.
Before I lose most of my audience and get my house vandalized . . . I will tell you how these things have affected our trip preparation. When Jerry and I were planning our route, we saw several different places on the map that said "road closed in winter." Now for Texans, that would mean that the road is closed for let's say November, December, and January. However, having lived in Oklahoma for 16 years now, we used our "expanded" view of the United States and reasoned out that these roads might be closed from say November to late February or maybe even March in a bad year. Imagine our surprise when we recently came upon these pictures -
This is a picture of Tioga Pass from May of 2011. This is our projected route across Yosemite National Park.
Another one of our prospective routes in a photo from last spring.
Are we having fun yet? or as Jerry would say "Don't worry 'Hon', we're making memories."
